Buffalo Crisis in Yellowstone!

Yellowstone National Park is the home of a small herd of approximately 4.000 genetically pure wild buffalo, descendants of 23 survivors of 30 million buffalo that once freely roamed in the US.

Since 1985, more than 5,000 Yellowstone buffalo have been killed by the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) and the National Park Service. The main reason given for the slaughter of the buffalo in this last remaining herd is brucellosis, a disease that can cause abortion in cattle.

But there has NEVER been a documented case of brucellosis being transmitted from wild bison to cattle.

Love, Respect, Protect

The Park Service claims that they are addressing brucellosis in the Yellowstone buffalo herd by vaccinating calf and yearling buffalo that test negative for brucellosis exposure. However, peer reviewed scientific studies indicate that RB51 vaccine is ineffective in buffalo, offering no significant protection from brucellosis. (Davis & Elzer, 2002)

The Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) was organized following the 1996-97 winter slaughter of 1,084 buffalo. BFC is an all-volunteer group who defend America’s last free-roaming buffalo 365 days a year, in the field, documenting all actions taken against them.
